The Advantage To Cyberattacks – Anonymity

 
If a cyber-terrorist wants to bring down an entire corporate infrastructure by means of a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack, the odds are in their favor of not being caught.  What does that mean to a business?  Simply put, they get stuck holding the bag, while the real culprits are never located.  According to Joe Stewart, a director in the Counter Threat Unit at SecureWorks, a computer security consulting firm, in an interview with The New York Times, he states “[t]he truth is, we may never know the true origin of the attack unless the attacker made some colossal blunder.”  The "economics" of such a comment suggest that unless businesses take a more progressive approach at protecting their mission-critical information, responding to a security incident, when it occurs, will be severely limited.  This lapse in organizational controls could lead to serious liability that may cripple the company.
